Why I write about food
I’m Zaira Asis, your host at Merienda.
This is a publication about food as a form of expression. The word merienda means ‘afternoon snack’ in Spanish, and it takes me back to my childhood - having mate cocido and toast after school. And this is how I approach this space: as a student, a learner.
I’m not a scientist or an anthropologist, but I’m curious. And I’m constantly inspired by food and people. I write stories that I find along the way in conversations I have, in walks around the city, and in my interactions with the world.
